000835

· Construct lower reservoir water supply intakes to maintain various water
uses. An initial assessment should be made as to where the elevation of water
supply intakes or other river diversions are critical to maintaining various water
uses and where it may be feasible to lower intakes. This would include the
potential use of reservoir dead storage. With respect to Lake Mead, the Southern
Nevada Water Authority water supply intakes are at elevations 1,050 feet (SNW A
isin the process oflowering this intake by 50 feet) and 1,000 feet above sea level.
Presently, the abilityto draw water from Lake Powell for the Navajo Generating
Station is elevation 3,490 feet above sea level.

AUTHORITY: (identify existing or new)
COST:
FUNDING SOURCE:
ENVIRONMENTAL DOCUMENT: (categorical exclusionlEIS/other)
ENVIRONMENTAL OR ESA ISSUES:
NEED FOR RULES AND REGULATIONS:

· Implement demand management. The Basin states will maintain aggressive
water conservation programs. Reclamation, in concert with the Basin states,
would develop PSAs (public service announcements) about the Colorado River
drought, the value of Colorado River resources to the west and the nation, and the
need to be especially mindful of the need to use water wisely.

AUTHORITY: (identify existing or new)
COST:
FUNDING SOURCE:
ENVIRONMENTAL DOCUMENT: (categorical exclusionlEIS/other)
ENVIRONMENTAL OR ESA ISSUES:
NEED FOR RULES AND REGULATIONS:

· Terminate Illegal Diversions. Illegal diversions represent a loss of water from
the Colorado River system which others are entitled to use. The Bureau of
Reclamation estimates that there are about 5,700 to 27,200 acre-feet per year of
Colorado River water consumptive use due to illegal diversions in the States of
California and Arizona.

-9-
