For the Cameo site, <br />the trend results for 1986 to 1993 indicated decreasing <br />annual dissolved-solids loads at a rate of 2.95 % per year <br />(Butler, 1996). For Colorado River above Glenwood <br />Springs, the next site on the Colorado River upstream <br />from Cameo with available 1986 to 1993 water-quality <br />and daily-values data for analysis, the trend in annual <br />dissolved-solids loads was downward by 1.77% per year <br />for 1986 to 1993 (Table 5). The major surface-water <br />source flowing into the Colorado River between these <br />two sites is the Roaring Fork River. No statistically <br />significant trends in annual loads were detected in the <br />Roaring Fork River at the mouth for 1986 to 1993. <br />The changes in annual loads at Colorado River above <br />Glenwood Springs of 1.77% per year and at Roaring <br />Fork River at the mouth near Glenwood Springs of no <br />trend do not completely account for the 2.95% per year <br />downward trend in annual loads at Colorado River near <br />Cameo. Portions of the downward trend of 2.95% per <br />year in annual dissolved-solids loads at the Cameo site <br />for 1986 to 1993 may be due to springs located in and <br />around the town of Glenwood Springs. In this area, <br />approximately 475 000 to 534000 tons of dissolved solids <br />are added annually to the surface waters from the <br />springs (Warner et aI., 1985; Liebermann et aI., 1989). <br />Additional study is needed to determine if salinity or <br />discharge from the Glenwood Springs have changed, <br />and, if so, have the changes affected trend results at the <br />Cameo site. Groundwater discharges south of Glen- <br />wood Springs also may affect trends at Cameo. In their <br />December 1977 to January 1978 study of groundwater <br />contribution to the salinity of the Upper Colorado River <br />Basin, Warner et aI. (1985) measured the base-flow salt <br />load at sites on the Colorado River and its tributaries. <br />In comparing the salt load from a site just downstream <br />from Glenwood Springs and the mouth of the Roaring <br />Fork River to the salt load downstream at the near <br />Cameo site, an increase in salt load of about 250000 <br />tons/yr was estimated at Cameo, an increase that possi- <br />bly was produced by direct groundwater discharge to <br />the river (Warner et aI., 1985).
