Hefley, Tancredo review data
on safety of Cherry Creek Dam

/

Congressmen look at

plan that would raise

dam, displace residents
..../ '
News Staff Writer

Two Colorado congressmen
questioned National Weather
Service experts Thursday about
the probability of torrential rain-
faU that could split the Cherry
Creek Dam.
Weather service data in a study
by the Army Corps of Engineers
concIuded- the Cherrv Creek
Basin could get 25 inches of rain
in three days.
That would lead to flooding
which would breach the dam, the
report said.
Reps. Joel Hefley and Tom Tan-
credo, both Republicans, have
pushed for the corps to conduct
'an outside peer review of the

Weather Service data.
After - Thursday's meeting,
however, Tancredo said he is sat-
isfied with an internal review the
Weather Service recently con-,'
ducted. ·
Hefley, 'however; remained
skeptical. ' '
"I, have more confidence in
their projections than, I did
befor~, "
Hefley said.' "I am still not con-'
vinced this is something we have
to worry about."
The corps determined in 1993
the Cherry Creek Darn would fail
in the event of a deluge seven
times greater than a 100-year
flood, resulting in thousands of
deaths and billions of dollars of
damage downstream.
To make the darn safer, the
corps is studying several alterna-
tives, including raising the darn
up to 15 feet and building
upstream backup darns.

That plan could require the
federal government to purchase
and condemn homes in Green-
wood Village and Douglas Coun-
ty. But n6decision has been
made, said Bill Miller, the project
director forthe corps. '
A decision on the alternatives,
previously expected by Septem--
ber, will be delayed' until early
winter, Miller said.
Dozens of homeowners and lo-
cal elected officials aren't con-
vinced by the Weather' Service
data.
"Getting an outside peer
review is still our main push,"
said Jan Herman, an organizer of
a group of landowners opposing
upstream dams.
The corps has scheduled the
first of a series of public forums
from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at
the Sheraton Four Points Hotel;
600 S. Colorado Blvd,
