.

003189

TASK 4.A--PREPARATION OF
YAMPA WATER AVAILABILITY MODEL

Purpose

The purpose of this task is to prepare a model of the water resources in the study area
that is suitable for investigations of water availability to project elements and alternative
projects.

Responsibility

LRC\VE will be responsible for this task.

Approach

The project team will undertake the following activities:

1. Review information and conduct interviews with the Yampa River basin water
administrators; define major water rights, diversions, depletions, return flows,
and so forth that may significantly affect water availability at identified potential
reservoir sites; and identify the imponant river reaches to be included in the
water availability modeling.

2. Collect historic (1922 to 1987) monthly streamflow records in computer format
for the Yampa River basin from the HYDRODATA system. Develop relation-
ships between sites with historic streamflows and unmeasured sites where
streamflow measurements are desired. Tnese relationships will be derived from
correlations based on elevations, drainage basin size, and so forth, and produce
estimated flows during the 1922 to 1987 period. Where necessary, historic flows
will be adjusted for historic diversions and depletions of basin features to be
modeled. Flows will be placed into a form suitable for an electronic spreadsheet
model.

3. Devise a structure and calculation approach for an electronic spreadsheet for
use in the Yampa River basin water availability studies. Derive operating cri-
teria for the diversions, depletions, instream flow needs, and so forth, of the
Yampa River basin features to be included in the modeling. Hydrologic input
nodes will be assumed on the Little Snake River near Lily (USGS station) and
on the Yampa River near Milner. The downstream hydrologic node point will
be the USGS station on the Yampa River at Deerlodge Park.

4. Verify values calculated in the spreadsheet through comparisons \vith historic
data.

14

DEN/800P/033.51
