This is accomplished by providing
irrigation system inspections* at no charge to homeowners, renters, housing communities
and businesses along the Front Range. Slow the Flow Colorado is closely modeled after a
successful program developed by the Utah State University Cooperative Extension called
Slow the Flow save H20 and was adopted in 2004 in Colorado as a pilot program of the
Center for ReSource Conservation (CRC). The clear demand and success of the program
during its pilot year prompted the CRC to implement Slow the Flow Colorado as a
permanent program of the Western Water Conservancy (WWC), a division of the CRC.
Each year, funding for the program has been procured from the participating cities and
utilities as well as the Colorado Water Conservation Board. Many months of work go
into preparation for the program and a significant amount of time is spent analyzing and
reporting data after the inspection season has concluded.
*The terms inspection and audit are used interchangeably throughout this report.

What is an Irrigation Inspection?
An irrigation inspection is a series of tests performed on an irrigation system that
determine its efficiency. The tests checl< the application rate, uniformity of application,
and pressure of the system, as well as the soil type and root depth of the turf to determine
how the efficiency of the system can be improved upon and to develop the most
appropriate watering schedule for the landscape. A visual inspection of the system is
conducted to pin-point any flaws or repairs that need to be addressed. Irrigation
inspections are conducted for a nine-weel< period during June, July and August and take
approximately two hours per residential site. Non-residential sites tend to be comprised
of large landscapes and can tal<e a significantly longer amount of time to complete.

Program Growth

Year Participants # of Auditors Audit Hours
2004 (5) Boulder, Erie, Lafayette, 5 1000 hrs.
Longmont, Louisville
(7) Boulder, Erie, Lafayette,
2005 Longmont, Golden, Thornton, 11 2400 hrs.
Westminster
(9) Aurora Water, Boulder,
2006 Erie, Lafayette, Longmont, 17 3600 hrs.
Golden, Greeley, Thornton,
Westminster

13
