The operation and maintenance costs are broken down into the major
categories of broodstock/refugia and augmentation, research, and administration and are
presented in Table It
'f

(INSERT TABLE tHERE)
S

ISSUES AND PERMITS

Throughout the development of this study, a number of issues have been raised relative
to the culture and propagation of the endangered fishes and their recoverY. Some of
th i~sues were addressed and incorporated in this study. ~r :ues re~
unres so utlon 0 t e . ues is beyond the scope of . tu '. Gi'.-c
. . . Issues, they have been briefly described below:

o There is a fundamental conflict between rearing fish in a hatchery environment and
maintaining full genetic diversity and natural production of fish. The concepts of
natural production and hatchery production concepts diverge as constant rearing
temperatures, intensive culture and artificial feeds are used to increase production
and reduce costs in the hatchery operation.

o Well water is a preferred water source for a hatchery operation because it is free
of fish diseases which are prevalent in a surface water supply. Use of well water
improves hatchery health and performance, but does not address the issues of the
. impact on the fish due to constant temperatures, constant quality and the
imprinting of fish.

CWCBl.ES

uJW a ~a-d-
6~ ~ <Jv;~
~ 0~ c9r LR-:Jurft

10
