Located at the site of a diversion channel for the e
hydroelectric dam, the site was envisioned in 1974 by
. Wisconsin paddler; George Steed, who noticed the
~''''''''~y's spring flood-control releases. From 1976-1978,
r ,.~:- . \he direction of Don Sorenson, boulders were
I .
\. The remaining
releases are reserved for events like World Cup slalom,
the U.S.Team Trials and race camps, the USCA Marathon
Canoe Race, Pan America Cup Race and an annual rodeo
in August. The total cost to build the Wausau facility was
around $250,000, with additional donations of materials
and labor from local volunteers. Currently the facility is in
the process of a face-lift, which involves shortening the
course and creating new routes to run. Since its inception,
the whitewater park has been run by a private, non-profit
organization, overseen by a board of directors.
Info: (715) 845-5664, WWW.dwave.netl-wkcc.

000244

e

. Ogden, Utah
Utah ski bums no longer have a mandatory drive to
Wyoming and Idaho for their whitewater fix thanks to
Ogden paddler John Daniels. Daniels took on the
challenge of creating four features on a 200-yard stretch of
the Weber River through town, and has seen his labor
bear fruits. in the form of hundreds of congregating
paddlers. The first and second holes are adaptations of a
sewer line and a weir formed by an aqueduct, respectively.
while the third and fourth features were constrictionl
boulder placements by engineers Gary Lacy and Kent
Butters. Each feature is better at a different flow.
/"'''.;>, park was completed in October 2000, after years
.
