'II, (',I '7,:~:~\;)i:t;~'", '" ~'Ii <br />J ,b ~'I f (j I'{-..J il '; J t:' t'l.h~ <br />~ ".'~'l" ;..o! ,~{ ......A,,("'.."'\~~l ,..'.J,.ii,:" <br /> <br />Mexico's Fox promises governors assistance in <br />drug, water battles <br /> <br />ASSOCIATED PRESS <br /> <br />April 22, 2002 <br /> <br />NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico - Presidellt Vicente Fox met yesterday with several <br />governors from northern Mexico, promising to help them battle drug smuggling and <br />SUppDrt them in their fight with the United States over water. <br /> <br />"I'm velY proud to see Mexican culture flourish in the nonhern part of the country and <br />in front of the United States," Fox said "I believe that it is necessary that we continue <br />working to construct step by step a Mexico that we all want." <br /> <br />Fol' met with governors Tomas Yarrington ofTamaulipas, Enrique Martinez of <br />Coahuila, Fernando Canales of Nuevo Leon, Patricia Martinez of Chihuahua and Angel <br />Nunez of Hidalgo. <br /> <br />With first lady Martha Sahag6n seated behind him on his horse, Fox rode six miles with <br />the governors and many others during the gathering. <br /> <br />The governors have asked for help in the fight against drug smuggling and other <br />organized crime. and have complained about their lack of water. <br /> <br />Fox, who has launched his own fight against the drug trade by arresting several <br />prominent drug lords, promised that officials would soon see the reaull:S "o[this joining <br />of forces to clcfeat a common enemy, to restore security in all pans, and assure the <br />liberties that today allow us to be who we are: a successful countty, a country of <br />winners." <br /> <br />The United States Bays Mexico owes it 1.4 million acre-feet of water under a 1944 water <br />treaty, but Mexico says it doesn't have the water to return. One acre-foot is 325,851 <br />gallons of water.
