UTeacherJ COlUervation

Park Elementary School
623 East 5th Street, Durango, CO 81301
September 10, 2000

Southwestern Water Conservation District, Durango, CO

Some of the areas covered by the workshop were: Cultural
perspectives and their relationship and effect on natural resource
management, the changing face of public lands and how land
use decisions are made, field trips to a family farm practicing
holistic principles, a visit to an active archeological dig, and an
exposition of an extensive array of educational materials and
programs available to us.

All in all, we feel it is an extremely worthwhile workshop and would strongly recommend it. Finally, we want to express our
thanks and appreciation to the agencies that supported us with scholarships that allowed us to attend.

Sincerely,
Carolyn Anderson, Joanne Currence, Pam Peavey & Gloria Tarket .

The Water Information Program .6YearJ ,Old,

In 1994, the Water Information Program was created to
accommodate the needs of the public, local communities and
educational organizations for information on water resources.
The Program is sponsored by water districts, federal and state
water commissions and agencies in the San Juan and Dolores
River Basins.

Currently, the Water Information Program provides a variety
of services for water users in southwestern Colorado.
Brochures, summaries of news articles on water related issues,
a World Wide Web site, as well as information for newcomers
to the area and those considering a move are available. This
past year the Water Information Program staff participated
in area water seminars and workshops and were active sponsors
of area Children's Water Festivals and the annual Teacher's
Resource Workshop sponsored by the U. S. Bureau of
Reclamation and Colorado Soil Conservation District.

Moving into our seventh year, a number of changes have
occurred. A new Information Coordinator was hired in
August, Carla Harper of Cahone. Carla is well known in the
Four Corners Region for her work with area agencies in
natural resources through the community services of Fort
Lewis College. Carla brings not only her expertise but a fresh
new approach and ideas for our program.

site is currently undergoing a major overhaul under her
expertise. Lori, who also works for Fort Lewis College, brings
many new and creative ideas to the web site. The updated
site will feature a Kid's Korner page and each participating
entity will have its own information site. There will also be a
site featuring on-going regional water projects such as the
water management activities in the La Plata River Basin, the
San Juan River Implementation Program, the Rio Blanco
Restoration Project, Weather Modification Program on-going
in southwest Colorado, the Vallecito Water Company's new
domestic water system and work in the upper Animas River
by the Animas River Stakeholders Group.

AI> part of our sixth year assessment, each program component
is undergoing an evaluation of its worth and opportunities
for expansion. Recipients of the Press Clippings Summary
were recently mailed a survey pertaining to its effectiveness
and format. Due to that response, we have added another
Colorado newspaper, the Pueblo Chief tan. In addition, the
Rocky Mountain News web site is downloaded on a daily
basis. Additional brochures and a new board member packet
are in the works for future publication. The staff and
consultants of the Water Information Program hope to offer
workshops and town meetings in the up-coming year.

The staff and new support team wish to thank everyone for
In addition, the Water Information Program has a new web their continued constructive input and support of a very
site administrator, Lori Murphy of User Friendly. The web worthwhile program. .
2
