Decision Support Svstem Concepts

. 000042
,I

Page 2

modeling environmPnt where data related to the Colorado River are readily accessible by
water users and administrators, the decision makers. The DSS will include a "tool box"
(models subsystem) of accepted models wbich will be determined in consultation with an
Advisory Committee. These models may include existing models, or new generation
developed models, depending on the needs of the water users and administrators.

The architecture and functional specifications of the DSS will be developed in close
cooperation with the Advisory and Technical Committees in conjunction with the
Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Automated Data Processing (ADP) section. It is
anticipated that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology will be used to satisfy
many of the DSS requirements. The particular GIS to be used and its implementation will
be coordinated with the DNR GIS strategic direction to be fin~H7.ed in August, 1992.

It is expected that the proposed DSS will have heavy and frequent use since it is an
information system as well as a modeling environment. The system hardware and software
will be universal and include both local and wide area network access to allow ,the greatest
sharing of computational power and data storage.

JRE/clf:gen-dss.wp
