Report from Public Education and Outreach Work ing Group
( Jeris Danielson)

Jeris noted that two new members have been appoint ed to the Working Group – Jeff Cra ne and
Reagan Was k om. He then referred the IBCC to a Comments and Suggestions handout that
outlined input from the public regarding educational needs (See attached Handout).

The Working Group had decided not to create a whole new educational program on water issues.
The Working Group believes that there are many entities in the state that are currently able to
disseminate relevant information and that a new information source is not needed. The Group
proposes to use existing entities for information d issemination.

The Working Group recommends that the IBCC have a website that is independent of the DNR
website. An IBCC website will enable the Committee to develop joint educational initiatives
between roundtables. If a presentation is made by one of i nterest to others, there could be either
cross - attendance or effec tive information dissemination.

Melinda Kassen requested a list of current water education groups. Jeris noted that the Working
Group is currently preparing a list of these organizations o r information providers in spreadsheet
form. This data base will describe each entity, what it does and contact information. The
Working Group will send the list to Roundtables and the IBCC for help in completing it .

T. Wright Dickinson requested that if and when Roundtables have specific information to share
or distribute to other Roundtables, this information be put on the website.

The IBCC noted that we need to have a way of encouraging people to use the website. How can
we get people to use the sit e? Perhaps the consultant who helps set up the site can help with this.

Report from the Needs Assessment Working Group (
Eric H ecox reported)

The Group met and helped in the selection of the contactor. It will also assist in setting priorities
for needs assessment studies.

CDM was selected as lead firm. The company has a wide variety of subcontractors with both
geographic and substantive diversity . DNR is currently negotiating the final contract with them.
Sue Moray will be the CDM Team Leader and will be assisted by advisors for each Basin.
$600,000 per year is available this year for the contract and it is hoped that there will be the same
amount annually for future years.

Eric requested input from the IBCC on a future chair for the group. I n addition, the Working
Group would like input on methods to prioritize studies. Eric noted several possible options: 1)
identify categories for studies and then fund task orders for studying issues in these categories
(possibly by basin); 2) use the fou r categories identified in needs assessment; 3) have the
Working Group prioritize task orders and then either decide or refer their recommendations to
the IBCC as a whole for final approval.

Input and discussion on how to categorize and prioritize studie s for needs assessment:
2
