statistics among the different durations, and to provide estimates for the missing rainflood peak

e

flows for the Dolores and Rico gages. After the low outlier years were removed from the

snowmelt data sets, the REGFQ program was run to analyze the snowmelt duration data for the

two gages.

8.4 Flow Frequency Curves. The REGFQ program provided statistics adopted for the

rain and snowmelt frequency curves for Rico and Dolores. The adopted statistics are the

smoothed "frequency statistics after adjustment" from the REGFQ runs. The snowmelt and

rainflood flow frequency curves for the Dolores River below Rico gage are plotted on Plates 12

and 14, respectively (Peak, 1-,3-, 7-, 15-, and 30-day durations), with the duration data tabulated

on Plates 13 and 15. The snowmelt flow frequency curves (Peak, 1-,3-, 7-, 15-,30-,60-, and 90-

day durations) for the Dolores River at Dolores gage are plotted on Plate 16 and the data tabulated

on Plate 17.

The rainflood peak flow frequency curve for the Dolores gage required special treatment.

-

The data set included an estimated peak fllow of 10,000 cfs for the October 1911 event; longer

duration data for the event are unavailable. A special FF A run was made so that the peak

rainflood statistics would match the statistics for the duration data. In this run, the 10,000 cfs

flow was treated as a historic flood peak, the highest for the period 1896 to 2003. The missing

rainflood peak flows (mostly for the period 1978-2003) were replaced by flows estimated in the

REGFQ run. The set ofFFA statistics from the special run matched the set ofREGFQ statistics

for the other durations. See Plate 18 for the rainflood flow frequency curves (excluding the data

points for estimated peak flows) and Plat€:: 19 for the tabulated data. The higher magnitude

rainflood duration data (I-day to 30-day) at Dolores, and to a lesser extent at Rico, represent

general rain on snow after the main snowmelt period.

e

3~'
.<.
