South Platte Roundtable, HB1177 Process, June 13, 2006 <br />What are our Values Pertinent to the SWSI Objectives? <br />Notes from Breakout Groups Compiled by MaryLou Smith, Aqua Engineering, Inc. <br /> <br />Provide for Environmental Enhancement <br /> <br />Kinds of Environmental Enhancement <br />Need to define environmental enhancement <br />Preserve ecosystems <br />Provide for in - stre am flows <br />Preserve lake levels <br />Protect water quality <br />Preserve riparian corridor <br />Natural riparian systems <br />Riparian areas provide habitat <br />Recognize environment is always changing <br />Need to address water quality issues related to providing or not providing <br />for e nvironmental enhancement/protection <br />Should include protection of the environment, not just enhancement <br />Need to determine historic environmental settings in CO <br /> <br />How Can We Do It While Providing for Other Needs as Well? <br />Figure out how to live within our mean s environmentally -- <br />balance our water demands with water supply in a sustainable way <br />Be willing to reflect on what’s really important to us and be willing to “give up” <br />what we need to preserve the environment <br />Manage resources as best we can to preserve th e environment for future <br />generation - stretch out environmental quality as far as we can while <br />maintaining quality of life we are accustomed to <br />Protect what we have now <br />We need for decisions to be made locally instead of nationally, so we can come up with <br />flexible solutions that are site specific to protect and enhance the environment <br /> <br />How to Pay for It <br />Who is willing to pay for it? (It’s a market driven system) <br /> People who want to keep ag in the equation? <br />Needs to pay for its worth <br />Environment does not h ave a revenue stream <br />Benefit/cost decisions to determine what is and is not feasible <br />Rate payers should not have to pay for enhancement <br />Let public fund it <br />Relates back to customer values — what’s the customer willing to pay for? <br />People will provide it if i t’s important to them <br /> <br />Other Observations <br />This can drive back up M&I sustainability <br />This objective not as high for me as others <br />Environmental Enhancement will be a natural outcome of other efforts <br />Environmental enhancement is not contrary to building infra structure <br />Environmentalist concerns need to be participants in project development <br />
