Prairie flowers and cacti bloom in <br />the drier regions with marigold, sunflower and <br />other hardy plants. Berry shrubs and colum- <br />bine, Colorado's official flower, carpet the foot- <br />hill region. Above 7,000 <br />feet nights are quite cool throughout the sum- <br />mer, and the usual brigh t sunshine makes the <br />days comfortably warm. Even in midwinter <br />when air temperatures are low, the warm sun- <br />shine and clear air of higher altitudes make <br />such temperatures much more comfortable than <br />would be experienced under other circumstances. <br />Denver, at the high western edge of the <br />Plains, has a mean annual temperature of about <br />500, and an average annual rainfall of about <br />16 inches.
