UUlI:.);)

Long Hollow Dam and Reservoir Summary Report-Preliminary Draft

feasibility study, such as the geologic reconnaissance study, the wetland delineation, the cultural
resources evaluation, and production of a reconnaissance level opinion of cost (+/-50 percent).

4.0 GEOLOGIC RECONNAISSANCE

LPWCD contracted with Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. (H-P) to perform a feasibility
level, engineering/geology evaluation of the LHR site and geologic conditions that could have a
major impact on project feasibility and which would provide a basis for future design level
studies. After visiting the LHR site in January 2003, H-P prepared a report based on field
observations, interpretation of aerial photographs, and H-P's experience with similar projects
which concluded that:

· There were no indications of geologic conditions that would make the proposed dam and
reservoir technically infeasible.

· The proposed dam site and reservoir appear suitable for either an earth embankment or
roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam.

· Most of the construction material needed for an earth embankment or RCC dam appear to
be present near the proposed dam site. No source of rip-rap apvears to be vresent close to
the proiect area.

· Additional geologic and geotechnical engmeenng studies, that include subsurface
exploration and laboratory testing", In Phase II. we will be needed to develop appropriate
design recommendations for the project. (Alternatively. better describe additional work so
that there is some assurance that it is appropriate to gO to final design,)

5.0 GROUNDWATER HYDROLOGY

WWE performed a separate groundwater study of the Red Mesa Aquifer to obtain a better
understanding of the hydrogeology of the aquifer and its relationship to surface water flows in

991-077.115
May 2004

Wright Water Engineers, Inc.

Page 6
