Chemical analyses of the water from 60 wells and springs <br />were presented in the USGS study. For the purposes of continuity and comparison the <br />data from the USGS study are shown in Table 6-2 and on Map 7. Unfortunately, none of <br />the forty-seven wells selected for obtaining water quality data in 1997 and 1998 are the <br />same sites as the sixty wells and springs in the 1954 USGS report and neither sets of <br />data specify the formation the well being produced from. The chemical analysis for <br />these wells and springs indicated five of fifty.four samples were reported to have <br />dissolved solids exceeding 1,000 ppm; four had hardness levels exceeding 700 ppm; <br />and four had nitrate (HN03 as nitrate) levels exceeding 45 ppm. In 1945, health experts <br />considered 45 ppm the upper nitrate level to be safe for consumption by infants. <br /> <br />VI-2 <br />
