The ice
damming causes it to overflow its banks.

"The ice just blocks it up and the water has to go
somewhere," said Meeker Police Chief Bob Hervey.

The flooding left a foot of water and ice on Water Street
and the irony was not lost on the residents living there.

a:nll:lVl.-,,"jIlJoz.

"It's going to live up to its name, I guess," said longtime
Meeker resident Allen Slaugh.

liiliipeople are evacuating In the
town of Meeker because of
flooding. 9NEWS at 9 p.m. January
17,2007.

Hervey says the temperatures in Meeker have been
getting down to 20 degrees below zero in the past few
days, which is why the river froze.

Several Red Cross shelters have been set up in Meeker, but authorities say most of the
evacuees are staying with family.

Sand and sandbags are being brought in to help deal with the flooding and police are watching
the situation closely, getting hourly updates.

They hope warmer temperatures will help the ice melt, but worry that if it melts too fast, the
flooding could only get worse.

(Copyright KUSA*TV.
