",

HAYDEN DIVERSION WATERSHED
ROUTT COUNTY COLORADO

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Introduction

The Routt County Soil Conservation District requested the Natural Resources
Conservation Service to conduct a study of water quantity and quality problems found in
the Hayden Diversion Watershed Area in Colorado. The objective of this study is to
identify water quality problems in the watershed, quantify the extent of the identified
water impairments, and define areas where project actions can be taken to eliminate or
reduce the impairment.

Participation in the study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture is under authority of
Public Law 83-566, Part 503A. The principal participants are the Natural Resources
Conservation Service, the Routt County Soil Conservation District, and the Upper
Yampa Water Conservation District.

The objectives of the project are:

1. It is desired to eliminate the annual stream channel modification of the Yampa River
related to agriculture.
2. It is the goal to maintain irrigated cropland as an viable land use in the project area.
3. Other objectives are to maintain the recreational value of the Yampa River and
preserve cultural resources that may be exist in the area.

Problem Identification

Major problems identified in the watershed are: impaired water quality in the Yampa
River on an annual basis during periods of diversion construction and maintenance, the
potential inability to divert water cost effectively, and streambank erosion.

Resource Information

Size of watershed (acres)
Land cover - Total cropland (acres) (Irrigated)
Urban & Miscellaneous (acres)

5,142
4,121
288

Land ownership - Private (percent)
State - Local (percent)

98
2

Number of Farms
Average farm size (acres) (Irrigated)
Prime and important farmland (acres)

34
143
2,200

Hayden 4
