Surge Irrigation: Surge irrigation is a relatively new irrigation technology that is now being recognized as a
usable practice in the Arkansas River area. This study will allow area irrigators to observe the effectiveness of
surge irrigation as an improved irrigation Best Management Practice under local soil, water and environmental
conditions.

Renovation and monitoring of drainage systems: Tile drain installation and drainage ditch renovation has been
done but there has been limited monitoring of the effect. This feature of the project will observe and quantify the
effect on water table levels, crop yields and returns.

A fmal innovative feature of this project is the combined use ofBMPs to reduce nitrate and salt loading on the soil
and in the runoff water and ground water. Salt tolerant crops combined with more efficient irrigation technology
can reduce the amount of salt loading, pickup and leaching. This project will demonstrate methods of achieving
this while maintaining economic viability. This will make available to producers a complete package of
management practices concerning improved crop types and yields, irrigation practices, water quality concerns and
economic returns under saline soil andJ or water conditions.

',VIT.

Project Participants

Proiect Sponsors:
Colorado State University Cooperative Extension (Responsible Agency)
Natural Resources Conservation Service-USDA
Northeast Prowers County Soil Conservation District

Proiect Coordinator.
