I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

o Lake Canal Company
o Lake Canal Reservoir Company (aka Gray Lakes)
o Cache la Poudre Reservoir Company (aka Timnath Reservoir)
o Colorado Big Thompson Project (C-BT)
o Wells (some augmented wells and some Coffin wells)

With agriculture, these water rights are used in varying combinations to provide for early
season and late season crop water requirements. As urbanization occurs, it is presumed
that all of the C-BT units will gradually, but eventually be turned over to potable water
purveyors. Therefore, this water source is not considered under a future built out
urbanization scenario.

The service area for the Lake Canal system is not known precisely but it is estimated on
the State Engineer's web site to be 6,799 acres as reported currently and was estimated
to be 7,700 acres from GIS mapping of the service area boundary.

See Figure 2 for a detailed map of the Lake Canal service area.

Lake Canal Company holds a direct flow water right from the Poudre River that normally
furnishes a good supply of early season water from May 18 to the latter part of June or
early July. There are 260 shares outstanding in Lake Canal Company.

Direct flow rights can be summarized as follows:

Priority
Number

Priority Date

Direct Flow Right
(CFS)

5

March 1, 1862

2.15

12

Sept. 15, 1864

2.78

53 or 54
(discrepancy in
number between two
sources)

November 1, 1872

158.35

The total direct flow right from all three decrees is 163.23 CFS. Historic annual
diversions from 1950 to 2002 are shown in Figure 3.

The historic annual yield is considered to be 30 acre feet per share, so with 260 shares
outstanding, approximately 7,800 acre feet (AF) of water is available to meet early
season needs in a normal year.

Aqua Engineering, Inc.
June 7, 2004

Canal Modernization Feasibility Study
- 3 -
