I
i
I
I
I
major farms in the area, leaving dozens of smkller operations without a chance to get
supplemental water for their crop. i

I
Prior to last year, when the city started the first-come-first-served method for renting
North Poudre water, farmers who wanted wa~er were told to mail in their requests and
were allotted a portion of what was available.!Knowing they might get only half of what
they wanted, some farmers inflated their requests.
!
I
North Poudre plans to deliver 2.5 acre-feet pet! share, down from a typical quota of
about 4.5 acre-feet. The company's supplies ar~ expected to be short this year because it
borrowed water last summer - during a prolonged stretch of hot, dry weather in the
middle of the growing season - against this ye~r's supply.
I
I
More water might be available because of a recient increase in the distribution quota set
by the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy:District. If that happens, North Poudre
farmers left out of Tuesday's allocation will be 'notified and given a shot at the water.
I

The Platte River Recovery Implementatioh Program Governance Committee
e'G.c.") has hired Jerry Kenny, PhD as th~ new Executive Director: Jerry Kenny
has been employed at HDR in Colorado for ma~y years and I look forward to working
I
with Jerry in his new role. I would also like to thank Dale Strickland and Clayton Derby
of Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WESt, Inc.) for their many years of service
. I
under the Three State CooperatIve Agreement. I
I
I
I
The United States Senate Energy and Na~ral Resources Committee,
Subcommittee on Water and Power held alhearing on S. 752 (the Platte River
Recovery Implementation Program and Pathfinder Modification
I
Authorization Act) on April 25, 2007. In aqdition, the House Natural
Resources Committee, Water and Power Subcommittee held a hearing on
April 27, 2007 on the companion legislatiOl~, H.R. 1462: Senator Salazar chaired
the Senate Subcommittee hearing. Ted Kowalst9, of the CWCB staff, Dan Luecke
(NWF), and Alan Berryman (NCWCD) all testified in support of H.R. 1462. My staff
appreciated the Colorado Congressional delegaAon support. This issue will also be
I
discussed at the Board meeting. i
I
Sharon Whitmore, the Environmental Accornt Manager for the Platte River
Program will be leaving the Platte River Program to become the assistant
I
coordinator for the San Juan Recovery Implementation Program: I wish her the
I
best of luck, and I look forward to my staff working with her in this new role.
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
26 I
i
I

..~

.

.

.
