b. Relationship between healthy rivers and healthy fisheries. Intact watersheds are usually <br />the richest in species health. This map shows the White River National Forest in <br />Colorado. This Forest constitutes only 4 percent of the land base of the Colorado River <br />Basin, but its watersheds contribute 16% of the flow measured at Lees Ferry AZ. The <br />Forest Service rates only 31 of the 121 watersheds as Fu nctional. Relationship between contaminated water and unproductive land. While not an <br />ecosystem value, per se, it is important to note t hat the converse is also true. Whether <br />from over - irrigation with salty, selenium - laced water, or from the unregul ated discharge <br />of highly contaminated ground water produced during energy extraction, productive <br />farmlands can become un - useable due to bad water. <br /> <br />
