I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

An above ground, insulated steel tank is the recommended alternative tank type for reasons
related to both the goals of the water system upgrade project and the financial resources
available to complete the project. The primary objective of the project is to enhance the fire
protection capability of the Minturn water system and meet the criteria outlined by the ISO. As
discussed earlier, a minimum tank size of 600,000 gallons is required to achieve this objective.
Cost estimating for the entire project has indicated that a tank of this size, constructed of either
pre-stressed concrete or reinforced concrete, can not be built within the project budget. A quality
steel tank of this size can be constructed within the project budget and should provide the Town
of Minturn with many years of low maintenance service.

V.3 East Site Storage Tank

A. Description

This tank site alternative is located hi. the SW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 section of section 26. The site
is on a southwest facing slope at a base elevation of 8050. The tank will be connected to the
existing distribution system by approximately 860 feet of 12 inch ductile iron pipe. New pumps
located at the water treatment plant will be controlled through telemetry transmission of tank
water level, activating the, pumps to fill the tank when it has reached a preset low level
elevation. During all other periods of operation the tank will gravity flow into the existing
system,

B. Design Criteria

The tank elevation at this site was selected to raise normal system operating pressures so that
design criteria of a minimum 40 psi, and a maximum of 100 psi, would be satisfied at all
demand points. This site is also high enough in elevation to provide required fire flows while
maintaining a minimum residual pressure of no less than 20 psi, as required by ISO and UFC.
A secondary criteria, of setting the tank at an elevation whereby gravity flow from a potential
future water treatment site at Bolt Lakes would be possible, is also satisfied by a tank at this site
and this elevation. Figure 1 shows the location of Bolt Lakes.

A tank located at this site could be constructed of either concrete or steel since it will not need
to be fully buried.

C.
