Telemetry, the tank access road, and
the tank supply main are not included in the costs shown in Table 9. The insulated, steel tank
presents the lowest cost alternative of the three tank types examined.

H. AdvantageslDisadvantages

The use of concrete for the new water storage tank has several advantages over steel
construction. In general, concrete, tanks require somewhat less maintenance than steel tanks,
especially with respect to the tank interior. Concrete tanks do not require periodic painting of
the interior walls. This would offer a great advantage to Minturn, since the tank would need
to be placed out of service for up to several weeks in order to clean and paint the tank's interior.
Since the new tank would be the only tank serving the town for, at least, the near future, the
town would be at risk for fire protection, emergency, and equalization service during the time
the tank is out of service. It is likely that some sort of limited temporary storage would be
required.

Table 9
Estimated Construction Costs for- Three Types of Water Storage Tanks

Category Prestressed Reinforced Insulated
Concrete Tank Concrete Tank Steel Tank
Tank1 $337,500 $283,600 $248,40()3
Earthwork2 55,600 75,400 31,900
Piping & Appurtenances 15,000 15,000 15,000
Overhead/Profit/Escalation/Fees 26,400 26,200 17,500
Sub-total4 $434,500 $400,200 $312,800
Contingency (15%) 65,200 60,800 46,900
Total $499,700 $461,000 $359,700

Notes:

1.
