The upper end of the slide intercepted the upstream
face of the dam below the water level. Approximately 500 acre-feet evacuated.

Peak flow measured 23 miles downstream; Approximately 2500 cfs,

Damages: The dam itself was breached. About 10 headgates were washed out or damaged. About 40 head of sheep
were killed. One residence was flooded with slow moving water. (There was no loss of human life. Because of the
time of year, the cabins and trailers below the dam were not occupied, and the area downstream was not in use by
campers and fishermen. The dam breached at a spot that missed a trailer that is located just below the dam.)

Owner: The Leroux Creek Water User's Association

Location of Dam: Delta County, on Leroux Creek, which is on the south slope of the Grand Mesa, near Hotchkiss.
Section 35, Tl2S, R93W.

Hazard Classification: Class I (loss of human life expected in the event of a failure.)

Maximum dam height: 55 feet

Normal capacity of the reservoir: 700 acre-feet

Dam length: 2300 feet.

D: mydocslCarl Smith Dam
