Need for the Project

The Guenzi's own in their wells what is considered a very junior
water right. There are numerous downstream ditches, a reservoir,
and the Interstate Compact with Nebraska which all have senior
water rights to the Guenzi wells. Some of these rights are more
than 50 years senior to their wells. The Guenzi's have some ties
to ditch and reservoir waters but 25 out of the 31 wells are the
only source of water on the farm. Having wells for irrigation
requires that the depletions from the pumping of the Guenzi wells
be replaced during times when there is a "call" on the river by a
senior downstream water right. LWU has successfully been used for
the past 2 years to cover the depletions on these wells. The
Guenzi's has been very dependent on LWU to cover their
depletions. The Guenzi's with their 31 wells produce
approximately 1500 acre-feet of summer time depletions and
approximately 1000 acre-feet of winter time depletions. Projected
2004 depletions provided by the LWU can be found in Appendix A.

The Guenzi's wants to control and develop a recharge system that
will generate augmentation water to be used to offset the
depletions caused by their 31 wells. By controlling and
generating their own augmentation the Guenzi's can strengthen
their own coverage and help strengthen the LWU.

Feasibility Study
Guenzi Aug Project
April 2004

2
