. . ,

Mountain Ground Water Resource Study

. Overview
Initiated in June of 1997 by Commissioner Pat Holloway, this water resource study is
intended to provide a credible, scientific basis for judging land development proposals
in the mountainous parts of the county. Rapid development in this region, which
typically relies on individual well and septic systems, has increased the demand on
water supplies and the amount of septic emuent returning to the ground water system.
Heightened public concern about the adequacy and quality of the ground water supply
as evidenced in community plan recommendations, assisted with the creation of the
study.

. 1998 Highlights
During the first year of the three-year study, a broad-based oversight committee was
created to direct the study. The technical lead agency and county partner in the study
is the U.S. Geological Survey. Other committee members represent local, state and
federal agencies, private water and related consultants, academia and the non-profit
community.

Data collection and public awareness building were the primary focus of the first year
with funding coming from a Colorado Water Conservation Board Grant, USGS and
Jefferson County match funds. Accomplishments include: water sampling of 135 wells,
approval and installation of a temporary evapotranspiration research tower, volunteer
network established to measure rain and snow fall, 25-30 community information
presentations, well-contractor's seminar, and 30 print media hits.

. 1999 Program
The upcoming year will focus on continued data collection and analysis and a
formalized public relations campaign and educational program. This will include
quarterly water quality sampling, monthly water quantity sampling,
evapotranspiration tower monitoring and ongoing monitoring of rain and snow
measurement.

.
