This study continues from this point, upstream, to approximately the east
section line of Section 3, T. 14 S., R. 91 W, The results ofthis study will enable the
County to implement the guidelines of the National Flood Insurance Act for new growth
being experienced in this area ofthe County, This study will supplement existing flood
study data for Delta County and will extend more detailed flood plain mapping into an
area that does not have a detailed study, The need for this study was presented in a
"Needs Assessment for Floodplain Map Revision ", prepared for Delta County,
September 1999.

2.0 PAST STUDIES

A Flood Insurance Study was completed for Delta County, Colorado in 1983 (revised
1991), The past study included the lower portion of Minnesota Creek from the
confluence with a branch of the North Fork of the Gunnison River to approximately the
western section line of Section 4, T. 14 S" R. 91 W.

3.0 AREA STUDIED

The supplemental study for Minnesota Creek starts immediately above the previous
detailed study and extends approximately 2,5 miles upstream 1,87 miles. The
supplemental study was also extended downstream approximately one mile to ensure
consistency with the past study, Results for downstream sections that overlap the
existing study will not be reported, The study area is shown on the vicinity map attached,

4.0 BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Minnesota Creek has its headwaters in Grand Mesa National Forest, in the Elk
Mountains, approximately 12 miles east of the town ofPaonia, There are several small
reservoirs in upper part of this drainage used for irrigation and municipal water storage,
There are also small irrigation diversions from Minnesota Creek and tributaries. The
Minnesota Creek drainage, through the study area, ranges from elevations of over 12,000

1
