Which ones are definitely in conflict? <br />The next step in interest based negotiation is <br />Inventing Options for Mutual Gain. <br />In the option inventing phase, each of us should think of the <br />options that meets the other person’s interests as well as our own, <br />because in doing that an amazing amount of creativity and good <br />will is released, and that leads to good decisions. Remember, we <br />are building options at this phase, not deciding. <br />Here are some suggestions to keep in mind during this stage of <br />the process. <br />1 Separate this phase from the decision making phase <br />2 Suspend judgment temporarily <br />3 Save conclusions and proposals until later <br />Options you offer <br />4 Don’t defend them <br />5 Ask for advice on how to improve them <br />6 Rework them from what you learn <br />7 Articulate disadvantages as well as advantages <br />Options they offer <br />1 Don’t attack their options <br />2 Ask questions about them <br />3 Ask them to articulate advantages <br />4 Ask them to articulate disadvantages <br />The third step is crafting a decision we can all live with <br />Crafting a Decision—Experimenting with the Options <br />Piggyback—add on <br />Whittle—take off <br />Dovetail—combine <br />
