<br />basin range from 13,000 feet in the headwater areas to <br />approximately 4,900 feet at the mouth. The average slope of the <br />basin is approximately 2.5 percent. Drainage areas at the <br />upstream and downstream limits of detailed study are 1,082 square <br />miles and 1,129 square miles, respectively. <br /> <br />Minnesota Creek, a tributary to Gunnison River, has its <br />headwaters in the Gunnison National Forest in Gunnison County, <br />approximately 15 miles upstream of the Town of Paonia. It flows <br />in a northwesterly direction to its confluence with North Fork <br />Gunnison River approximately 0.5 mile downstream of Paonia. The <br />drainage area of Minnesota Creek at this confluence is <br />approximately 53.1 square miles. The average slope of the steep <br />mountainous terrain which comprises the basin is approximately <br />150 feet per mile (2.8 percent), and the average streambed slope <br />is approximately SO feet per mile (1.9 percent). <br /> <br />Surface Creek has its headwaters in Grand Mesa National Forest, <br />approximately 18 miles northeast of the City of Orchard City. <br />Surface Creek flows from its origin near Leon Peak in a <br />southwesterly direction to its confluence with Tongue Creek near <br />the western corporate limits of Orchard City. Drainage areas at <br />the upstream and downstream limits of detailed study are <br />approximately 44.7 and 38.6 square miles, respectively. The <br />drainage basin of Surface Creek drops from an elevation of <br />11,100 feet at its headwaters to 5,500 feet at its confluence <br />wi th Tongue Creek. The average basin slope through the study <br />area is approximately 120 feet per mile (2.3 percent). <br /> <br />Cedar Run has a drainage area of approximately 4. 7 square miles <br />at its mouth. The basin begins at an elevation of 7,160 feet, <br />approximately 2.3 miles northeast of the Town of Cedaredge.
