The county is
bordered by Gilpin County to the north, Summit and Grand Counties to the west
and North West, Park County to the south, and Jefferson County to the east.
Georgetown is the county seat. U.s. Highway 70 runs through the center of the
county.

Because of the steep mountain slopes and narrow valleys in Clear Creek County,
development has, by necessity, occurred near the streams and often within the
floodplain. City streets and state and interstate highways cross the floodplains
and often constrict the free-flowing streams with bridges and embankments.
Continuing development within the original study area is expected, and pressures
leading to intensified floodplain use will probably accompany such development
(Reference 2).

Climatic conditions for Clear Creek County are characteristic of a high-altitude,
dry continental climate. Record temperatures at several local communities range
from a high of approximately 920F to a low of -320P, and a mean annual
temperature of 43.40P. The normal annual precipitation in the higher altitudes is
in excess of 35 inches; at Idaho Springs, the average annual precipitation is
approximately 15.9 inches, in Georgetown it is approximately 16.2 inches. There
is no data available for Silver Plume (Reference 1 and 2).

The U.S. Census reported the population of Clear Creek County to be
approximately 9,223 in 2004 (Reference 4).

The Town of Georgetown is located in Clear Creek County, Colorado,
approximately 2 miles east of the Town of Silver Plume, 11 miles west of the
City of Idaho Springs, and 45 miles west of the City of Denver, Colorado.
Georgetown is approximately 0.95 square miles in area. The 2000 U.S. Census
reported the population of Georgetown as 1,088 (Reference 4).

The City of Idaho Springs is located in the Clear Creek Valley, in northeastern
Clear Creek County, Colorado. It is approximately 30 miles west of Denver and
20 miles east of the Continental Divide of the Rocky Mountains. The total land
area contained within the corporate boundaries is approximately 1.04 square
miles. The 2000 U.S. Census reported the population of Idaho Springs as 1,889
(Reference 4).

The Town of Silver Plume is in central Clear Creek County, approximately 40
miles west of Denver, Colorado, and 10 miles east of the Continental Divide of
the Rocky Mountains.
