A legal notice was placed in the Mountain Mail, one day a week, for three consecutive weeks, beginning October 23,1979, to notify all interested persons of the beginning of the study and its objectives and to sol ;cit any relevant facts and technical data concerning local flood hazards. Federal ~ state and local agencies were contacted regarding t~e avail- ability af any re?orts~ studiest or investigations which may contain infonnation relative to flooding problems in the cOO1munity. Infonna- tion was received from FEMA and CWCB. During the course of the study, the results of hydrologic analyses and flood elevations and boundaries, prepared by eWeB, were reviewed. As a result of this review and coordination with FEMA and ewes, the information supplied was used in this Flood Insurance StudYe 2.0 AREA STUDIED 2.1 Scope of Study This Flood Insurance Study is confined to the designated incorporated area of Salida, Colorado. The area study is shown on the Vicinity Map (Figure 1). The limits of detailed and approximate studies in Salida were deter- mined by FEMA with community and study contractor consultation at the meeting in June, 1979. Floods caused by overflow of the South Arkansas River were studied in deta;l fran the confl uence wi th the Arkansas Ri ver to County Road 125. The areas studied by detailed methods were selected with prior- ity given to all known flood hazard areas, and areas of projected development or proposed construction for the next five years, through January, 1985. Floods caused by overflow of the Arkansas River were studied by approxima te methods, w; thi n the corporte 1 imi ts of Sa 1 i da . Approximate analyses were used to study those areas having a low development potential or minimal flood hazards. The scope and methods of study were proposed to and agreed upon by FEMAt and the City of Sa 1 i da . 2.2 Community Description The City of Salida is located in south central Colorado in the eastern portion of Chaffee County approximately 90 miles west of Pueblo, Colorado. The total land area contained within the corporate boundaries is 1.7 square miles. The Colorado Population Report Series CP-26 #79(C-l) reported the population of Salida in 1979, as 5,409 (Reference 2). Economic activities of the area include cattle ranching, tourism, and some small scale mining, primarily for coal.
