Part V-Alternatives Considered

A. Description l?f Alternative Considered

The following potential alternatives were considered and described in detail below:
1. Take no action
2. Proposed Action
3. Alternative Sites

1. Take No Action

This proposed alternative takes no action. Residents of Goodman Point will continue to
purchase their water in bulk from the City of Cortez and haul it back to their homes.
Water for fire protection would also have to be brought in from outside of the Goodman
Point area.

2. Proposed Action
The proposed action includes connecting into the existing MWC four-inch (4") service
line at two locations. Goodman Point Water Association will utilize a four-inch (4")
water main that will tie into the two MWC mains; one on County Road (CR) 17 on the
north side of the proposed project, and one on Country Road P to the east of the proposed
project area. Existing and proposed water lines are predominantly within a county road
right of way or immediately adjacent to the right of way on private property except for
three zones where they bisect tilled dryland farms or undeveloped agricultural property.
Figure V-I shows the water line alignment, as well as water tank and pump locations
associated with this alternative.

A water tank and booster pump station will be located near the fire station at the
intersections of CR P and CR17. Water storage is required to meet peak demands. Due
to elevation gain within the service area, a booster pump station will be required to meet
service requirements. Hydraulic considerations dictate the location of the water tank and
booster pump station to maintain minimum working pressures throughout the distribution
system. As distribution system pressures approach the minimum working pressure, an
increase in pressure by way of a booster pump station is required. This location of the
water storage tank and booster pump station results in a closed-loop pumping system that
will use variable capacity pumps, pressure sensors, and control logic to maintain
minimum working pressures.

Residences nearest will be equipped with a PRV to reduce pressures in the home if
necessary. A backup power generator will be located adjacent to the booster pump
station to provide power to the pumps during a power failure and ensure continued
service to residences.

Montezuma Water Company has available for use in the proposed projects a 131,000-
gallon water storage tank that may be used to meet the project's water storage needs.
Although the size of the storage tank is more that what is required for the proposed
project, the tank would be donated to the project thereby reducing overall project cost.

Goodman Point Water Association - Preliminaty Engineering RepOli

11
