Training includes
sample preparation, collection, analyses,
shipping, recording, and Quality Assurance
(QA)/Quality Control (QC) procedures.
Participants must complete the cycle of sample
preparation and analyses including all QAlQC
procedures during the workshop.

The CSU Extension Technical Advisor then
accompanies volunteers on the first several
sampling runs, until satisfied that the volunteers
can complete the sampling procedures
independently.

.

mf

Volunteer in Training

Annually, the North Fork Volunteer Program is
visited by CD OW personnel to perform regular QAlQC testing and certification. From
this, the CDOW will produce an annual activity report of the North Fork programs'
QAlQC data.

Other personnel from the EP A Quality Control Division or the CDPHE may also make
site visits to evaluate that the appropriate QAlQC procedures are being followed.

2.6 Quality Control/Quality Assurance Measures

Quality control measures both in the field and in the lab are detailed in Quality Assurance
Project Plans (QAPPs) developed by the CSU Technical Advisor for all the parameters
sampled. For this project, three separate QAPPs were created, one each for nutrients,
bacteria, and metals. Contact Karla Brown, CSU Cooperative Extension, Montrose, to
receive a copy of these reports.

Rinsing the metals filter

Sampling pr.ocedures, labeling, containers, and
preservation follow Standard Methods (1989)
and/or EPA guidelines (from Table II of 40 CFR
136). This includes such items as keeping
samples chilled until analysis, compliance with
sample holding time for respective parameters,
using certified reagents and standards, and using
appropriate detection (EP A, CDPHE, and/or
CDOW) limits. The accuracy and precision for
each chemical parameter generally follows
Standard Methods (1989) and/or EPA
requirements. All equipment is frequently
serviced, calibrated, cleaned, and maintained.

2-6
