September 15, 2004

Lower Arkansas River Basin
District 10
Diversion Structure Inventory

2 PBWW Northside Intake

Narrative of Structure Components and Repair Plan

The Pueblo Board of Water Works (PBWW) Northside Intake structure was originally
constructed in 1949. There is no dam/spillway at the structure location, only a broken
concrete rubble jetty protruding from the south bank to help guide the river flow toward
the intake structure. The diversion structure is located on the north bank along the
outside curve of the river. The intake structure consists of two 2.5-foot-wide steel
vertical lift gates with a galvanized trash rack bolted to the headwall and upstream
wingwall. A chain-link fence with locked gates surrounds the structure. There is a
timber debris guard approximately 15 feet upstream of the structure. A 6-foot-wide
concrete box culvert of unknown depth is located downstream of the structure that
conveys flow downstream. Above the box is an open channel, approximately 10-feet-
wide by 4-feet-high, and appears to be an overflow. Concrete walls form the channel
banks. The north wall extends approximately 400 feet downstream, and the south wall
extends approximately 0.25 miles. The north wall is constructed of concrete with
counterforts, and the south wall is mostly a stone and mortar wall with some concrete.

The overall condition of the structure appears to be good. Pressure-injected grout is
needed for the cracks found through the concrete diversion structure. Crack repair is
needed for the downstream walls, including filling of the cold joints. The upstream
wingwall has several significant cracks and is in need of repair. Another concrete wall
was poured behind the upstream wingwall more recently. Additional rock should be
placed to reinforce the jetty. Additional bank stabilization is needed upstream and
downstream of the structure along the outside curve of the river bank.

Summary of Recommended Repairs

Diversion (I ntake)
o Repair damaged concrete
o Place additional rock for upstream jetty
o Install additional stabilization along north bank

Estimated Ranae of Cost

Low: $0 - $250,000

Farnsworth Group
