August 4, 2004

South Platte River Basin
District 64
Diversion Structure Inventory

1 South Platte

Narrative of Structure Components and Repair Plan

The South Platte structure consists of a low-level dam that is approximately 200 feet-
long, regulator gates consisting of one 16-foot-wide Obermeyer Gate and one 6-foot-
wide steel radial gate, and a diversion consisting of one 16-foot-wide Obermeyer
headgate. Improvements were made to the regulator gates and diversion structure in
1996. A small concrete building at the south bank contains controls for operation of the
Obermeyer Gates.

The overall condition of the structure appears to be good. The low-level dam consists of
a wall that is approximately 4-feet-high and 16-inches-thick. This wall was poured in
front of the original structure prior to 1996, possibly in the 1970s or 1980s. The original
piers were extended approximately 2 feet upstream to tie into the newer wall, and now
act as counterforts. Intermediate piers also remain, but are not being used. A notch,
approximately 4-feet-long and 2-feet-high, is located at the bottom center of the dam.
This appears to be utilized for flushing sediment downstream. Portions of the original
structure also remain for approximately the north 30 feet of the dam. North of the
structure, there is a broken concrete and rubble dam that extends from the original north
endwall to the north bank of the river, aligned in a northwest-southeast direction.

The low-level dam could have been extended approximately 130 feet farther to the north
bank. Stabilization is needed downstream of the concrete apron of the dam. One of the
counterforts is missing. The north 80 feet upstream of the dam should be dredged.
Downstream of the regulator gates along the south bank, there is a 50-foot-long scoured
area that should be filled in and stabilized.

Summary of Recommended Repairs

Dam/Spillway
o Extend dam approximately 130 feet to north bank
o Install downstream channel stabilization
o Upstream dredging
o Fill in and stabilize scoured area along south bank

Estimated Ranae of Cost

Low: $0 - $250,000

Farnsworth Group
