The structure looks fairly new, but according to the water commissioner <br />steel structures do not last long on this river because of the acidity. It may be necessary to <br />eventually replace this structure with a concrete structure that is more resistant to the acidity of the <br />river. <br /> <br />Upstream Configuration: There is a diversion dam that diverts flow along the river to the headgate, <br />which sits along the east bank of the river. The diversion dam is constructed of boulders, with a steel <br />core and footer boulders. <br /> <br />Comments: There is some minor erosion along the west edge of the diversion dam. There is an <br />additional 4' wide steel slide gate next to the headgate. According to the water commissioner this <br />slide gate was originally meant to pass debris away from the headgate. This slide gate does not <br />actually pass much debris away, and so it was in a closed position at the time of the site visit. The <br />headgate was apparently lowered from the originial design position at some point, and this rendered <br />the slide gate for passing debris useless.
