The headgate
needs to be completely removed and replaced, and upstream and downstream river bank protection
is needed.

Upstream Configuration: The headgate sits long a short feeder channel on the east bank of the
river. There is a log trash boom at the upstream end of the feeder channel along the river.

Comments: According to the water commissioner, the river bank upstream has been breached
during high river flows, sending excess river flow around the headgate and down the canal. The
ditch rider will close downstream slide gates during high flows when the headgate fails. When this
happens water will breach the headgate access road and flow south through the Department of
Wildlife fish hatchery and back to the river. There is significant riverbank erosion downstream
located at latitude N37 <>34'37.8", longitude W1 06004'19.3".

Estimated Range of Cost: High

F:\Projects\20060507\Documents\Reports\Rio Grande\lnventory Forms\San Luis Valley Canal.doc

OA No. 2-2006-0507
