Thunderstorms result in high peak flows, short duration of flows, and small volume
of runoff. Historically, snowmelt has caused the greatest flooding on the Colorado and Gunnison
Rivers with augmentation from rain adding to some historical peak flows. The largest known
snowmelt flood on the Colorado and Gunnison Rivers was in July, 1884 with an estimated flow
at Fruita of 125,000 cfs. Other significant flood events occurred in 1917, 1920, 1921, 1935,
1952, 1957, 1983, and 1984. The 1984 flood of 70,000 cfs at the State Line was at a frequency
of slightly less than once in 50 years.

8
