This Floodplain Information Report provides updated information of
floodplain delineations on existing FEMA maps. In addition, it provides floodplain
management information to guide the local governments in the use of the maps.

Regulated floodplains for Hinsdale County is described and mapped within the Flood
Insurance Study (FIS) and on the Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM), respectively, both
dated September 1987. A small part of FIRM Panel No. 08053C0125 B was updated
through the Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA) process by FEMA dated August 1998.

The PIS and FIRM define floodplains for portions of Lake Fork Gunnison River (Lake
Fork) and Henson Creek in the vicinity of Lake City using hydraulic analysis. The FIRM
identifies approximate floodplains for portions of Lake Fork, Henson Creek, Cebolla
Creek, Mineral Creek, Spring Creek, North Clear Creek, South Clear Creek, Rito Hondo
Creek, Big Spring Creek, Crooked Creek, Rio Grande River, Little Squaw Creek, Squaw
Creek, Weminuche Creek, Los Pinos River, Middle Fork Piedra River, East Fork Piedra
River, Piedra River, Williams Creek, and Weminuche River, a few unnamed tributaries,
and numerous reservoirs and lakes. These floodplains were identified using the best
information available and were meant to represent floodplain conditions as they existed at
the time of the study.

The Flood Information Report for Hinsdale County summarizes updated floodplain
mapping and supporting information to replace floodplain delineations in the 1991
FEMA study. It includes a description of available hydrologic information for major
flooding sources within the County and, for CWCB designation purposes, supersedes the
FIS and the FIRM. In addition, this document provides basic information about
floodplain management and possible alternatives to formulate and implement floodplain
management objectives.

The floodplain information in this document meets the basic technical requirements for
designation and approval by the CWCR Colorado statutes require local governments
obtain from the CWCB the designation and approval of floodplain information for their
use in regulatory purposes. This document provides a means for the FIS and the FIRM to
meet that statutory objective. As new and more detailed floodplain information becomes
available, floodplain areas shown in this report may change. The CWCB will designate
and approve new information, and rescind old information as appropriate.

1
