000l~4

Endangered Fish Recovery Program, Denver, Colorado.

~

More formal publication and broader distribution ofthe content of this
Final Report as the updated and expanded information in a new edition of
the 1990 guide, prospectively retitled as Catostomid Fish Larvae and
Early Juveniles of the Upper Colorado River Basin-Morphological
Description, Comparison, and Computer-Interactive Key (proposed scope
of work was submitted to and approved by Recovery Program for FY
2004-2005).
Recovery Program and CDOW support for Part 2 of a comprehensive
guide to thecypriniform fish larvae and early juveniles of western
Colorado and the UCRB, a comparable and long-proposed guide with
computer-interactive key to the cyprinid larvae and early juveniles,
including three of the four endangered fishes in the basin (proposed scope
of work submitted to Recovery Program for FY 2004-2005). Rationale:
- Larval Fish Laboratory published Contributions to a Guide to the
CypriniformFish Larvae of the Upper Colorado River System in Colorado
over 20 years ago through the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (Snyder
1981). Based on descriptive information and illustrations from the
literature and several developmental studies funded in part by CDOW, that
document was intended to serve as the foundation for a comprehensive
guide.
- With this update to the 1990 guide, completing coverage of catostomid
larvae, and with proof-of-concept that computer-interactive keys can be
effectively prepared for and applied to identification of very similar-
appearing fish larvae, Part 1 of the comprehensive guide is now complete,
except for formal publication.
Enhancement of the computer-interactive key with extensive illustration in
future updates. Some illustration of the key might be gradually
accomplished as a byproduct of other computer-interactive key projects,
including that recommended above for cyprinid larvae ofthe UCRB.

~

~

Hudson, J.M., and J.A. Jackson. 2003. Population estimates for humpback chub (Gila cypha)
and roundtail chub (Gila robusta) in Westwater Canyon, Colorado River, Utah, 1998-2000.
Draft Final Report of Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, Salt Lake City, Utah, to Upper
Colorado River Endangered Fish Recovery Program, Denver, Colorado.

~ Increase trammel net effort (CPUE) in Westwater Canyon
~ Use hoop nets and electrofishing to improve probability of capture (p-hat) and
coefficient of variation (CV)
~ Incorporate a fourth pass to improve (p-hat) and coefficient of variation (CV)
~ Consider Black Rocks and Westwater Canyon a single population to be consistent
with the assumptions for closed population estimates
#15: Identification and Curation of Larval Fish by Colorado State University Larval Fish

2003 Report Recommendations,
