We restrain
ourselves because we understand that our enjoyment of
these activities may impair the ability of others to enjoy
themselves. Places of business need not post signs
banning these behaviors, just as governments need not
outlaw them; they can simply trust us to be considerate.
If only the same were true of smoking.

l.W. Earnest, Denver

Alternatives to jailing more citizens

Re: "Time for fresh jail thinking," Jan. 9 Perspective
article.

It warms the cockles of my heart to read in Doug
Linkhart's article about the alternatives to jail that the
City and County of Denver is exploring.

I visit inmates at the Denver County Jail every week and
find that many of them are good people who have just
made some mistakes. They don't know how to put
together the kind of life they want or even believe they
can succeed at it. They desperately want to change their
lives and the little help I can give them makes a big
difference. They say things like, "Now that I have
someone to work with, I have hope that I can succeed
on the outside." Then they begin the process of thinking
about what they want their lives to be like. They think
about what has gotten them where they are and what
they need to change.

The alternatives to jail that Denver is considering will
make it possible for many, many more offenders to get
this kind of help. Denver, let's get behind this in a big
way. It will not only save us tax dollars, but will create
productivity, happiness and a safer, more pleasant city.

Bruce Thron-Weber, Denver

California's use of Colorado River water

Re: "Right move on West's water," Dec. 31 editorial.

Urban Southern California shares The Denver Post's
belief that the seven Colorado River Basin states must

http://www.denverpost.comlStories/0.1413.36%257E416%257E.00.htm1

1/14/2005
