OO\}53u

Knowledge of the Proposed Pond Reclamation Project

Anglers were asked if they had "heard a lot", "a little", or "nothing at all" about the
proposed project. At the present time, warmwater anglers are not well-informed
about the proposed project. The largest percentage (48%) for example, knew
"nothing" about the project before being surveyed, while one in three (33%) report
having a "little" knowledge. Fewer than one in five, only 19%, reported that they had
heard "a lot" about the project (Figure 10).

Of those who had heard either "a little" or "a lot" about the project, 58% said their
information source was the newspaper, 33% said they had heard about it from friends
or relatives, 27% said their information source was television, 18 % heard about it
from Division of Wildlife Information, 11 % from radio reports, and only 6% heard
about the project through public meetings (Figure 11) .

This particular question hopefully provides some insight to the CDOW for future
informational efforts aimed at creating greater awareness on the part of anglers in
regards to what events or agency actions they need to be made aware of.

Support for the Proposed Pond Reclamation Project

There were four specific questions that probed anglers support for the various options
presented to them and for the project in general.

When asked "Do you support or oppose efforts to help endangered fish by removing
warmwater sportfish from ponds, and is that strong, moderate or slight support", the
warmwater anglers in the four-county area opposed the project by a 55% to 32%
margin, with 13% of respondents having no opinion (Figure 12). Those who strongly
opposed the project were the largest category of respondents at 32%, while only 9%
of warmwater anglers strongly supported the proposed project (Figure 13).

Interestingly, those who reported to have heard" a lot" about the proposed project are
more opposed to recovery efforts - 75% oppose - than those who are less informed
about the project. In that group roughly 50% oppose (Figure 14).

Analysis of the responses to the support question by age category also provides some
interesting results. Warmwater anglers 35 years of age and older are opposed to
recovery efforts by more than a 2-to-1 margin (61 %-26%), while those under 35
years of age are split, 44% in favor of the recovery effort and 44% opposed (Figure
15).

10
