Clear Creek is one of the original 1 7 counties created when Colorado became a state on
November 1, 1861, and it is one of only two of those counties that retains its original
boundaries. Clear Creek County's 396 square miles comprise an important portion of the
headwaters of Clear Creek, a significant tributary to the South Platte Basin. Approximately
80% of the County is owned by public agencies. Clear Creek is a statutory county, governed by
three county commissioners elected to four year terms (term limited to two terms). The County
seat is located in Georgetown. The County has a staff of 190 and a budget of $10,572,263 for
.2007. The 1990 Census showed a population of7,619 which increased to 9,553 in 2002, for a
total gain of 1,934 persons or a 25% increase. This County also serves as a bedroom
community area for the metropolitan Denver area for people that wish to live in a more rural
setting.
