/

The City does not have a system utilizing climatologic data to help schedule irrigations.
Evapotranspiration (ET) programs let homeowners know how much water to sprinkle on their
bluegrass lawns depending on the weather. The Gronning report recommended that an ET program
be implemented by the City.

3. Water-efficient industrial and commercial water-using processes.

Implementing this measure would include an audit of large volume industrial or commercial water
users that would possibly lead to methods capable of reducing water consumption. Additional staff
time is required to conduct audits of commercial facilities.

A. Private businesses

A list of the ten commercial water customers with the highest consumption for the period lanuary 1,
1997 through December 31,1997 appears below.

Ten Highest Commercial Water Users
Account Name Consumption (1000 gallons)
Doubletree Hotel 11,256
Centum Health Mercy Medical Center 10,420
Four Comers Health Care Center 6,081
Planned Environments 5,551
Iron Horse Inn 5,496
Strater Hotel 5,329
Island Cove Trailer Park 4,609
Animas Park Mobile Homes 4,548
Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory 4,496
Holiday Inn of Durango 4,258
The large customers include hotels, health care facilities, a small water treatment company, a candy
factory, and multi-family institutions. Since the City does not have a large number of high water
consuming industries, a plan which would modifY existing industrial processes to use water more
efficiently would probably save only a small amount of water.

B. The City of Durango should take a proactive stance and begin by auditing its own
facilities to determine if there are ways to increase the water use efficiencies of our buildings and
parks. This would be an excellent way to promote water conservation to other entities in the City.
Then the City should develop a close working relationship with the other large water users, both
public and private, to monitor their water use and discuss water efficiency measures on an annual
basis.

Several larger Colorado communities have installed central computerized irrigation management
systems which provide efficient control of irrigation water applied to city parks, greenbelts, street
medians, and landscaped facilities. These systems use radio-linked field controllers to monitor
10
