, Rocky Mountain News: Local

Page 2 of2

How quickly the audit program will grow isn't clear.

It is based on a 'Jtah program that is funded by water districts and the Utah governor's office.

Earl Jackson, a Utah State University professor who oversees Slow The Flow Utah, said it's vital that lawn
watering become as efficient as possible to ensure there's enough water to serve the booming American
West.

"We're growing :;0 fast that we're going to run out of water if we don't stop wasting it," Jackson said.

In Utah, studies have shown that audited systems can cut water use by 15 percent and more, Jackson said.

Csibrik said an analysis of water savings generated by the sprinkler adjustments done in the metro area
could be finished by the end of the year.

For more information on the water audits, call the Center for Resource Conservation at 303-441-3278, ext.
10.

System tips

How well does your automatic sprinkler work? Try the following:

. If your system doesn't have a pressure-regulating valve, get one installed.

. At least two times each season, turn your system on during the daytime and walk around your yard to
check for problems, such as clogged or broken sprinkler heads.

. Look to see how uniformly your system is distributing the water; at least 70 percent of the water
should be reaching your lawn, not being lost to sidewalks or evaporation. By having an expert fine-
tune your distribution, you can save hundreds of gallons of water a year.
