<br />Avon/Edwards/Wolcott <br />Area <br /> <br />Wolcott Bridge <br />This is another important access point to the <br />Eagle River on BLM land for boating and fish- <br />ing, above Trestle Rapids. It is also a danger- <br />ous place, with limited access between the <br />river and Highway 6 across from the Wolcott <br />Store. The BLM is looking into acquiring the <br />current Colorado Department of <br />Transportation site near the railroad trestle <br />west of Wolcott. They hope to develop this <br />site after the Department of Transportation <br />moves out. The rest of the land in this area is <br />privately owned, so this would be a good site <br />to purchase land or acquire easement rights. <br /> <br />Lake Creek Apartments and the Squaw <br />Creek State Land Board Parcel <br />Access along this considerable stretch of river <br />is open to the public at this time and is <br />important for many recreational activities. <br />Public access was granted along the river as <br />part of Lake Creek Apartments development. <br />A bike path has been constructed separate <br />from but parallel to the river for the length of <br />the project. The Squaw Creek Waste Water <br />Treatment plant provides a principal put in <br />and take out point for boaters, and with the <br />CDOW acquisition of the Squaw Creek Parcel <br />lease approximately one and a half miles of <br />river has been opened to the public for fish- <br />ing and other recreational activities. The <br />State Land Board owns the land downstream <br />from the Treatment plant and the continua- <br />tion of the CDOW lease is by no means cer- <br />tain. Eagle County has expressed an interest <br />in purchasing this land for recreation and <br />open space purposes and is trying to find <br />funding for this purchase. Any <br />improved/acquired access in this area is very <br />desirable. The Squaw Creek stretch of water <br />should be studied further a candidate for <br />catch-and-release or "fly fishing only" status. <br /> <br />62 <br /> <br /> <br />Eagle River Parks in Avon, Edwards <br />and Wolcott <br />In Avon, a park along the river providing pub- <br />lic access would complement the thriving <br />town center that is being created. A trail <br />along the river the length of Avon is proposed <br />and would tie into the proposed County trails <br />plan at either end of town. Pedestrian/bicycle <br />access could be provided to a potential park <br />via this trail. <br /> <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br />. <br /> <br />In the Edwards area, potential community <br />park sites include the State Rest Area or <br />acquisition of one of the several private <br />parcels that still remain in the area, such as <br />the Brett Ranch. Berry Creek Ranch 5th filing <br />provides considerable open space but has no <br />access to the river. With the development of <br />the Miller Ranch by the School District, <br />opportunities may exist for a partnership to <br />create a river park in the area of the school. <br /> <br />In Wolcott, all of the land in the "community <br />center" is privately owned. Opportunities may <br />exist for purchase or lease of a potential river <br />park, possibly in conjunction with the Wolcott <br />Bridge launch site discussed above. BLM <br />lands upstream may offer another option for <br />a community park site. <br /> <br />Edwards Area Easements <br />A IS' public access easement was granted <br />through Old Edwards Estates on the north <br />side of the river. Public parking does not exist <br />except for streets in the subdivision and this <br />easement involves being off of the bank and <br />in the water most of the season. The ease- <br />ment is not well known and crosses private <br />lots. <br /> <br />Avon Area and Easements <br />A 50' public access easement was granted <br />through River Forge development east of <br />Avon. It is a relatively short section of river <br />and a relatively unknown easement but avail- <br />able to the public. Another access exists at <br />
