j

The refuge will be managed to ensure continued
functioning of the wetland values. Supervised public access
to the area will be encouraged for educational purposes and
enjoyments. The habitat and wildlife species will be managed
to encourage waterfowl, wildlife, and fishery reproduction.

The value of the area has come to the attention of a
number of groups and agencies. Initially, the South Routt
County School District has taken the opportunity to use the
refuge for environmental studies and outdoor education.
A partnership was formed between our schools, DPOR, DOW,
Ducks unlimited, UYWCD, the u.S. Forest Service, the u.S.
Bureau of Land Management, Yampa Valley Fly Fishers, and the
Yampa Valley Alliance. The goals of this partnership are to:

. maintain a functioning wetland area,
. provide opportunities to the public for outdoor
education and recreation, and
. ensure accessibility to physically challenged users.

This wildlife observation area is indeed a success story
in which proponents of a project in cooperation with
governmental agencies have created a project which is a
benefit to our environment and our local economy.

John R.
