Water
for municipal and domestic use would be available to the water
users from the Owens Creek Reservoir but facilities required for
treatment, reregulation, and distribution of such water are not
included in the project plan.

Reqional Geology

This project would be located in the Colorado Plateau
physiographic province. The dominant topographic features of the
project area are Grand Mesa to the south and Battlement Mesa on
the north. These high mesas are formed by thick sedimentary
formations of Tertiary age overlain by a resistant lava capping
which protects them from erosion. These mesas reach to
elevations above 10,000 feet and receive heavier amounts of
precipitation than the adjacent valleys. The project features
are located at lower elevations along the drainages and gently
sloping bench areas. The valleys have been cut by streams into
the near horizontal sedimentary beds. The main drainages in this
area are Buzzard Creek and Plateau Creek which are tributaries of
the Colorado River.

The project lands are largely alluvial material derived from
the shales and sandstones of the Green River and Wasatch
formations. The lava capping on the mesas has also contributed
some material to the soils. An erosional bench on the western
portion of the project contains mostly residual soils developed
on the Wasatch formation.

Accessibility

Owens Creek Reservoir would be located about 60 miles east
of Palisade, Colorado along Buzzard Creek. The project area is
served by State Highway 330, which connects with Interstate 70
(U.S. Highways 6 and 24) 22 miles from Collbran. Forest Service
and county roads branching from State Highway 330 would provide
suitable access to project features.

1
