Feasibility Study
Town of Akron
Hoyer and Thomas/Kusel Wells

Introduction
The Town of Akron provides domestic water to the 1,711 residents of the town. All of
our wells are low producing, and the Town has difficulty keeping up with demand during
the summer months. There is no room for any population growth or additional industry
with the system as it now stands. The Hoyer and Thomas/Kusel wells are larger wells
than any on our system, and the two combined could double the water production
capabilities of the Town.

There is currently no backup power source on any of the Town's wells, and this project
will allow for the purchase of a generator to provide backup electricity to one of the
Town's existing wells. This will allow the Town to provide uninterrupted water supply in
case of electrical failure.

Project Sponsor
The Town of Akron is a municipality incorporated in 1882. Akron is the county seat of
Washington County, and is located approximately 115 miles east of Denver on the High
Plains. There are only two incorporated towns within Washington County, and as the
largest and the county seat Akron provides a variety of services to all residents of the
county. Among these are the library, cemetery, airport, swimming pool, youth recreation
programs, a golf course, three parks, and fire protection.

Project Service Area and Facilities
The Town of Akron's water system serves approximately 880 taps, residential and
commercial. Ten wells feed into a 1.5 million above ground storage tank, constructed in
1996. A map of the well and transmission lines is shown in Appendix A.

Hydrology and Water Rights
The Town of Akron holds well permits for the ten active wells now being used all located
within either the Camp Creek Basin or the Chadron Alluvium. A well permit has also
been granted for the Hoyer Well, and the application for the Thomas/Kusel well is in the
publication phase.

Project Description and Alternatives
The purpose ofthis project is to add two new wells, with transmission lines, to the Town
of Akron's water system to provide adequate water supplies for our current needs, while

5
